Creating a Race Atmosphere Along the Mersey

The International Mersey River Festival took place last weekend with a brand new addition, the racing extravaganza that is the British ThunderCat Racing Tour!

Festival visitors saw 18 racing boats battle it out on the Mersey, reaching speeds in excess of 65mph as they wizzed along the famous river.

All along the waterfront were an array of colourful flags and banners, printed and supplied by Your Print Partner.

In order to create the perfect racing atmosphere, the organisers of this exciting ‘splashtacular’ event required a vibrant display of colours in the spectator zones along the waterfront.

We printed long rolls of Aero Banner to attach to the metal railings in Albert Dock, featuring the ThunderCat logo and various sponsors logos. Aero Banner is the perfect choice of material for such a location – wind resistant due to the small holes woven into the 117gsm fabric, and printed with colourfast and UV stable inks.

We also provided a number of 5.1m tall Feather Flags, bright and large enough to be visible from the other side of the river! The aluminium frames we use for our Feather Flags are made from 2mm thick poles, making them the strongest flag frame systems available in the UK.

Meet the Team

Your Print Partner was visited by photographer Jane Harrison this week.

After taking a number of shots for our website of the various different departments at Millennium House, we decided to get the whole team together – and the result was captured below.

The YPP team is currently made up of 24 members of staff, however just four years ago it was a very different story!

YPP was founded in October 2011 by Stuart Maclaren. He originally started out as a print broker, where the goal was to utilise his experience from previously working in sales at a print firm to source better quality printed products at a cheaper unit price for his clients.

Working in partnership with several UK manufacturers, business soon took off and five months later Stuart hired his first member of staff – our General Manager Yvonne – to handle the mounting administrative tasks.

By July 2012, sales had taken off at such a rate that YPP’s partner manufacturer were beginning to struggle to meet deadlines. Rather than see his client’s left disappointed, or have to outsource to overseas manufacturers, Stuart took the landmark decision to invest in his own large format digital printer and manufacturing soon moved in-house.

From that day the nature of the business changed forever. Our production department now contains nine state-of-the-art large-format printers, and Stuart and Yvonne have been joined by a team of Designers, Account Managers, Salespeople, Print Technicians, Seamstresses and Warehouse Operatives.

YPP Sponsors Ambitious New Motorsport Team

Your Print Partner has joined a number of Lincolnshire businesses to lend its support to an ambitious local motorsport team.

PP Motorsport has graduated into the UK Clio Cup after only three years of racing professionally.

The team already has an enterprising plan of becoming a multi-car team in 2017 with the eventual goal of entering the British Touring Car Championship.

Lincoln to Host City-Centre Half Marathon Event

Local organisers, OSB Events, have today confirmed the launch of the Lincoln Half Marathon, which will take place for the first time on 2 October 2016 and is aiming to attract 4000 runners.

The race hub, start & finish will be at the Lincolnshire Showground, with the closed road route heading into Lincoln, past some of the city’s historical highlights and then circling the vibrant harbour of the Brayford Waterfront.

Race Director, Iain Hamilton said: “We’re excited to bring a half marathon race to our home town of Lincoln. Having organised events in and around the Midlands since 1991, it’s great that we’re able to launch an event here. Our aim is to contribute to the growing local economy by bringing people into the city and raising the profile of the city.”

He added: “Along with Cancer Research UK, we will be supporting a local charity which is close to our hearts, The Ethan Maull ‘Up Yours to Cancer’ Foundation. They are aiming to fund a home in Lincoln where families can stay whilst their children receive cancer treatment. We aim to support them in their mission to improve facilities for families whose children are affected by cancer.”

Brighton Marathon 2016 Smashes Records

Beneath brilliant sunshine on the East Sussex coast, just under 11,000 runners took to the streets to take part in the biggest ever Brighton Marathon.

The event smashed it’s goal of ten thousand participants, with 10,947 starting the race when Zoe Ball fired the starter’s pistol in Preston Park.

Duncan Maiyo and Grace Momanyi were crowned champions in the men’s and women’s races, respectively, both racing a long way clear of their rivals to take the titles.

At Your Print Partner, we have been busy working behind the scenes with the event organisers to decorate the marathon course with printed branding.

From the aero banner branding lining the finish straight, to the promotional boards and signage at the Marathon Exhibition, we were proud to see our print work all over this fantastic occasion.

In a post-race interview, as reported by Brighton newspaper The Argus, Event Director Tom Naylor said it had been an “incredible day”

He added: “The thing I’ve appreciated the most was just the colour, the race has just looked great.

“The atmosphere on the course has made it lovely, from all the reports we’ve been getting we’ve had an epic day.”

Alongside the eye-catching feather flags, banners and signage we provided for the race, we also assisted in the branding of the Brighton Marathon Exhibition. In fact, if you happened to be visiting the Brighton Centre last week and looked upwards, you would have seen one of our giant 5m x 3m hanging ‘Welcome’ banners!

YPP Managing Director Stuart Maclaren, who led a team of volunteers in Brighton branding parts of the course, said “We’ve had a terrific time working with this event, and I’d like to thank everyone who has helped make Brighton sparkle on race day!”.

“Working with events such as this one provides unique challenges for a print company. We’ve provided a huge range of printed products here, finished to brilliant quality by our in-house production team and delivered on time.”


Motoring on with Exciting New Projects

Our superfast production times have caught the attention of some people who really appreciate speed!

We’re delighted to be working on new print projects for the Silverstone Race Track, home of the British Formula One Grand Prix.

Last week we were able to provide a wide range of large-format printed display items to the race track to help promote their Track Day packages.

We produced some colourful feather flags, pvc banners, and rolls of digitally printed aero mesh branding to run along the sides of the famous pit lane.

The aero mesh also featured as the backdrop for Good Morning Britain’s Laura Tobin as she presented live from the track, promoting ITV’s new celebrity driving show Drive alongside legendary British Touring Car driver Jason Plato.

It’s Back To The Future Day!

Great Scott! Today is the 21st October 2015 and the day Marty McFly and the Doc visisted in the “future” in the Back to the Future film trilogy.

Earlier this year, we gatecrashed the Trade Only Show at the Ricoh Arena with our very own full-size Delorean time machine.

Celebrating our 4th Birthday!

Today at Your Print Partner we are celebrating our fourth birthday!

Company Founder and Managing Director Stuart Maclaren set up YPP in October 2011, initially working from home as a sole trader.

We installed our very first large-format digital printer in July 2012. Fast forward three years, and the company has grown so much that it now operates with nine print machines from our manufacturing hub in Lincoln, employing 18 permanent members of staff.

Our product range has grown to over 200 different products, with 97% of those items printed and manufactured in-house.

2015 has been a landmark year, beginning with our investment in new ‘superwide’ print technology at the start of the year, the acquisition of specialist flag producer The Flag Wizard in the Summer, and in the Autumn we broke all previous records for annual turnover.

Your Print Partner Acquires The Flag Wizard

We are pleased to announce further expansion at Your Print Partner with the acquisition of specialist bespoke flag producer The Flag Wizard.

As of today, The Flag Wizard will become part of the YPP Group and will begin trading as a division of Your Print Partner, based at our Millennium House headquarters in Lincoln.

The Flag Wizard was established by entrepreneur Steve Hannant in Norfolk over 28 years ago. The firm quickly established a reputation for excellent customer service, and expanded its product range from hand-finished bespoke flags to banners, bunting and exhibition display systems.

Our companies shared key values, putting an emphasis on innovation and product quality, and we all wish Steve the very best for the future as he departs for new projects overseas.

To support this expansion, we have also invested in another new high-speed large format Mimaki printer, which is expected to increase our annual textile print capacity by an additional 50,000 square metres. New staff will also be joining the company this month in both customer service and print production roles.

Image Reports Leading Lights

The below article was published in Issue 3 Volume 22 (April 2015) of Image Reports, a leading news magazine for the wide-format sector.

When first interviewed for Image Reports, the then 23 year-old Stuart Maclaren had set-up Your Print Partner in Lincoln just eleven months beforehand, and having spent £70,000 on his first output device – a Mimaki direct-to-textile printer – he was predicting a first year turnover of £600,000. That was 2012. Now, one of ‘the most successful things to come out of Lincolnshire 2014’ according to a listing in the Lincolnshire Echo, and winner of the ‘Young Business Person of the Year Award 2014’ in the Lincolnshire Media Business Awards,

Maclaren has a staff of 17 and is, by his own estimation, “the third biggest fabric printer in the UK by volume”. The company, which plans to transfer from the current site into a 2230m2 new build space at the other end of Lincoln – close to where it all started in a 65m2 space in 2011 – is expected to bring in £1.5m this year.

“I have big ideas and some people think I’m a cocky little sod,’ laughs Maclaren, adding: “A lot of people in the industry hate me; they think I’m changing the model of how a business should grow and that I’m moving too quick. I get a lot of ‘are mummy and daddy funding you then?’ which is just rubbish.”

“We haven’t actually needed much financial backing because what we’ve achieved has been mainly through internal growth,” adds Maclaren, pointing out that given a 46% increase in like-for-like sales for 2014 over 2013, Your Print Partner invested £100,000 last year on new print and finishing kit, including a 3.2m Mimaki 320 that brought its annual textile print capacity up to 250,000m2 and helped the company release a new range of fabric display products at the start 2015.

That follows the 2013 acquisition of a paper print company that YPP merged into its operations and the addition of a design service in 2014 “to fill gaps in our offering” says Maclaren, who says 96% of print turnover now comes from fabric printing, the other 4% split between PVC and paper products.
But it’s not just about gap filling and volume, though Maclaren admits that he’d rather take cheap work to keep machines running than have them sitting idle, and that “with higher speed and bigger volumes comes better buying power”. Maclaren, who’s background in sports management led him and YPP into the events space, admits to being a bit of an adrenalin junkie at work as well as at play.

“If we’re going to be part of a creative industry, we have to be creative ourselves,” stresses Maclaren. “I want my clients to see that we push the boundaries.” It’s a state of mind that has him attending shows like The Spring Fair and travelling the globe in search of new opportunities, like the Flux Furniture for which YPP is now the official UK distributor. Designed in the Netherlands, every piece is made from a single piece of polypropylene and folds flat into an over-sized envelope shape with just a few simple flips and folds, and can be custom printed by YPP.

“We also have an expo stand dressing and furniture package that you can fit in a mini,” enthuses Maclaren. “It comprises a fabric tension system, tablet and literature stand, a table and two chairs. We did a run through and it took our lady 20 minutes to set up the whole stand. And a whole set of new graphics costs just £90 and you then have a whole renewed stand system! That’s the kind of thing clients want – a total, cheap and easy package.”

But he admits that his enthusiasm sometimes outstrips the market’s readiness for products he wants to bring to the UK. “In China for instance, I see so many great possibilities about what can be done re. exhibition stands. But the UK is not always ready for stuff that really pushes them somewhere new. I get very excited about creative ideas but I’ve realised you have to really judge how something will be received and when the time is right to bring a concept to market.”

One of the concepts going down rather well is the Made in Britain marque that YPP puts on all its print and display products to help promote British manufacturing in the UK and abroad. All the staff wear Made In Britain pins too.

“The UK events and exhibitions markets are huge and fabric print is the backbone, so we’ll concentrate on that market and use textile print to bolt on other items… but maybe we’ll open an office in Europe too,” says the still very ambitious Maclaren, whose business interests stretch beyond YPP to include directorships or partnerships at Event Ts and Castlemaine Accountancy.

But it’s not all about financial gain. For instance, last Christmas YPP took 200 presents to children at the local hospital, and the company sponsors various local events and campaigns. “It’s about showing we’re local supporters. I don’t think these things bring in work though they get coverage in the media which does us no harm,’ admits Maclaren, who sees that the high profile does however bring increased competition. “There are lots of copycats appearing, which annoys me after I’ve done so much R&D and that does bug me. But I’ll always look to do things a bit differently – I think the industry needs changing up!”
